At some point, you may wish to start fresh with a new OS on your VPS or recover from a major misconfiguration. The OS Reinstall feature allows you to wipe and reinstall your virtual server’s operating system easily. Offshore-Servers (via the Virtualizor panel) provides a library of OS templates you can deploy in a few clicks. Before proceeding, take a backup of any important data on your VPS, since a reinstall will erase the current system entirely.
Steps to Reinstall your VPS OS:
- Locate the Reinstall Option: Log in to the VPS management panel and find the option labeled “Reinstall OS” or “OS Reinstall”. In Virtualizor, this is usually represented by an icon (often a circular arrow or similar) in your VPS control page.
- Select an OS Template: You will be presented with a list of available operating systems and versions (templates). Choose the distro or OS you want to install. For example, you might select Ubuntu 22.04 64-bit, Debian 12, CentOS 8, or Windows Server (if your plan supports Windows). Pick the OS and version from the dropdown or list.
- Enter New Password: The panel will prompt you to set a password for the new installation’s root/Administrator account. Enter a strong password that you will use to log in after reinstall. (If you forget it, you can still use the panel’s password reset later.)
- Confirm Reinstall: Confirm that you want to reinstall. The panel may show a warning that all data will be lost. Proceed with the reinstall, and the system will begin provisioning the new OS. This process typically takes a few minutes – you’ll see a progress indicator.
- Wait for Completion: The VPS will be powered off, the new OS image is applied, then it’s booted up. Give it some time (a Linux install might be 2-5 minutes, Windows could be longer). Once done, the panel should indicate the VPS is running with the new OS. You can then access it with the new credentials (via SSH or RDP as appropriate).
- Post-Reinstall Setup: After reinstall, the VPS is essentially a blank slate with a fresh OS. Any custom configurations you had before are gone. You’ll need to update packages and configure the server from scratch. This is essentially like having a new server. Make sure to secure it (update software, configure firewall, etc.) as needed.
One useful option sometimes provided during reinstall is “Format primary disk only”. If your VPS had additional data disks attached, this option (when checked) would reinstall the OS on the main disk but leave secondary disks untouched. This is relevant if you store data on a separate volume – it prevents that data from being wiped. Check the documentation or ask support if you have multiple volumes and are unsure how reinstall impacts them.
Reinstalling the OS can be a quick fix to resolve severe issues (like the system not booting properly due to a broken update) or to change your server’s OS (for example, switching from one Linux distro to another). Offshore-Servers’ automated reinstall saves you from having to submit a support ticket – you have self-service control. Just remember, reinstall is destructive, so use it carefully and always backup any data you can’t afford to lose before proceeding.
